Nagnata have a highly considered approach to design and a mindful of materials used for their products and their impact on both the body and the planet.
At this year’s Australian Fashion Laureate at the Sydney Opera House, Nagnata was awarded “Sustainability Designer of the Year” as recognition and a celebration of their ongoing commitment to environmentalism guided by their brand pillars Care for Country and Care for Community. We are so incredibly proud of Nagnata's achievement and feel very lucky to stock such a beautiful and thoughtful brand here at Alterior Motif. Let’s dive into some of Nagnata’s sustainability practices based upon their brand pillars.
Care for Country
To be truly sustainable is to be regenerative, and Nagnata’s ultimate goal is to give back more than they take in every aspect of their business. GOTS certified organic cotton is a key fibre utilised in their designs from the beginning and remains an essential material featured across all collections. They work closely with yarn spinners and knitwear technicians and have developed their own responsibly sourced Merino Wool fabrications. To greatly reduce excess waste in their production, Nagnata opt to work with engineered knitwear over cut-and-sew garments as this achieves zero yarn waste. For Merino Wool collections where there is some wastage they have developed hair scrunchies and other unique accessories to utilise this excess fabric. They understand “green washing” is rife in the fashion industry and are conscious to remain honest in their communication of their practices and always acknowledge obstacles and areas they working to improve and innovate.
Care for Community
Nagnata releases studio-to-street lifestyle pieces that blur the lines between technical sportswear and fashion. From early collaborations with Indian artisans to working alongside First Nations people in Australia, Nagnata are committed to taking meaningful actions through projects that give back to community. They celebrate traditional crafts and work towards providing economic opportunity and empowerment to the Aboriginal people through creative collaboration.
